Dr. Ravay Snow-Renner

Ravay publishes her scholarly work under her married name, Ravay Snow-Renner, but thought that was quite a mouthful for children. Ravay is hard enough to say on its own -- at least Snow is easy to pronounce and spell.

In addition to her work as an artist, writer and publisher, Ravay is a former English teacher and a recognized expert in the field of education reform. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Denver and has worked on education issues of local scope all the way up to international issues (e.g., quantitative analyses of data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study).

Ravay's particular expertise is in research methods, standards, assessment and accountability policy. She is especially interested in work that helps to build local school and district capacity for improving student learning. Before founding Snowbound Press, she worked in research and evaluation at Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Aurora, Colorado, as a project director for accountability studies at the Education Commission of the States (ECS) in Denver, Colorado, and as a program evaluator for the Colorado Statewide Systemic Initiative in mathematics and science.

Over the past several years, Ravay has worked on a variety of projects that relate to the development and implementation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). She hopes that you will not hold that against her. When she has time, she consults on Colorado and national education issues and is an active member of the Association of Colorado Evaluators (ACEE) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Here's what Ravay's most recent work has involved:

  • Designing and conducting evaluations for inquiry-based science curricula and for foundation-funded programs
  • Developing test items for state tests
  • Reviewing and revising guidelines for examining teacher supply and demand studies
  • Conceptualizing frameworks to evaluate the level of district professional development support for principals and superintendents
  • Researching successful principal behaviors in high-performing, high needs schools
  • Developing databases to track different state accountability systems and their effects
  • Working on task forces to define"scientifically-based research"
  • Clarifying the requirements of the NCLB legislation for states and writing out their implications for low-performing schools and state database structures in a series of policy briefs.
  • Revising a variety of papers on different topics (e.g., school/district capacity, labor flow,service-learning) as a technical editor.

Ravay is available as a research/evaluation consultant on a variety of current policy topics. To review her curriculum vita, listing her published scholarly articles, please click here.
